Welcome to APESHOT STUDIOS!

I'm Scott A. Gilbert, a librarian & library science student, web designer, graphic artist, illustrator, and cartoonist living & working in Houston, Texas with frequent visits to South Florida and Oklahoma.

In Fall 2004, a new comic story by me, "The Skies of Texas" will be included in a collection of comic stories about our country's leaders published by Fantagraphics Books. The collection will be titled The Bush Junta and will feature comix by Spain Rodriguez, Paul Mavrides, Carol Swain, and Mack White among others (Mack is also editing the book).

As a professional illustrator, I've been doing a lot of work for the New Times newspaper chain, Web Hosting Magazine, and other clients. See here for a portfolio of my illustration work.

The comic strip "True Artist Tales" has been my main creative venue since 1987. The strip appeared weekly in Houston newspapers (the Houston Press & The Public News) and on-line for ten years. Currently I'm on a creative sabbatical from the strip because I am kinda burned out. My longer comic book stories have appeared in Pictopia from Fantagraphics Books; Negative Burn from Caliber Comics; the SPX 1997 Comic; Jenny Zervakis' and Marc Cunningham's Zoomcranks; and Joe Zabel's great mystery anthology, Murder by Crowquill. I've collaborated with Harvey Pekar on his American Splendor comics (Windfall in 1995 and Comicon Comics in 1996, both published by Dark Horse Comics). Occasionally I've written critical articles for The Comics Journal. In 1995 I won the fabulous Xeric Grant Award, and with it published a collection of the best of my weekly comic titled It's All True! The Best of True Artist Tales. Copies of this 50 page book are still available from me at $3 per copy postpaid, so please email me if you're interested in getting one. You'll be glad you did.
